DIY Project

I love to make things, build things, design things, basically I am one of those artsy people who spend their down time making different things. Recently I got the chance to try my hand at building a piece of furniture and I am pretty proud of it.  I built a rustic shoe shelf made out of a wooden cable spool. Which thankfully we got for free from an electric company.

So this is what I started out with.

Then with the help of a very talented handy man (my sisters father in law) who knows how to do pretty much anything, sawed the spool in half.

The next step was filling any deep nail holes with wood putty and then sanding, sanding and more sanding. I used fence posts for the back of the shelf and the inner shelves. My wonderful husband got me a jig saw, which by the way I had never used before this winter, so after all the wood was sanded I traced out the inner shelves and started cutting them out with the jig saw.

I had to bring out a couple of pairs of shoes to make sure we were measuring out the dividers wide enough so that the shoes would be able to fit.

so once everything was cut and measured and fit together like it was supposed to, I took it all a part again and started to paint and seal the different pieces.  Then finally I pieced it back together and this was the end product.  I am pretty pleased with how it turned out.  The other half of the wooden cable is going to get turned into a similar looking shelf, but its going in my kitchen. When I get it started and finished I will be posting about it.

If you saw a bigger wooden spool in the picture above, thats yet another slightly bigger project I am going to undertake this summer...keep checking in and I will post the finished project.  Have a blessed week!
